A Note on Opera: Giuseppe Verdi’s “Falstaff”
Giuseppe Verdi was as gifted a dramatist as William Shakespeare. Verdi was such an admirer of Shakespeare that he based three of his operas on the Bard’s plays. As Shakespeare’s birthday is in April, we’ll be looking at the last of Verdi’s three “Shakespeare operas,” his 1893 comic masterpiece “Falstaff.”
“Falstaff” is Verdi’s final benediction to humanity, counseling us to take neither ourselves nor life too seriously. It brims with comic mishaps and poignant self-awareness, concluding in a joyous chorus reminding us “Tutto nel mondo è burla” [All the world is a jest.].
To be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of either music or Italian required.
