A Note on Opera: Richard Wagner's "Tannhäuser"

Tuesday, June 19, 2018
1:30 pm3:30 pm
Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta, 1201 Peachtree Street NE, 400 Colony Square, Suite 1104, Atlanta, GA 30361

Which type of love is preferable, carnal or spiritual?

Based very loosely on the medieval German poet Tannhäuser, Wagner posits that question and presents us with two extreme examples from which the lead character must choose: (a) the goddess Venus herself or (b) St. Elizabeth of Hungary. Given that this is a 19th-century German Romantic opera, guess who wins?)

While the conclusion may be foregone, the music that gets us there is some of Wagner's best: his only ballet, his best chorus, and his best baritone aria.

To be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of either music or German required.

Admission:
Goethe-Atlanta members: $20.00
Non-members: $25.00
