Richard Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" Part 3+4
"Der Ring des Nibelungen" [The Ring of the Nibelung], is the largest single theatrical creation in Western civilization. While derived from German medieval literature, Icelandic folklore, and Norse mythology, its story is a simple one: a sprawling, dysfunctional family in which the corrupting nature of power is overcome by the redemptive nature of love.
Mounting a production of Wagner's so-called "Ring 'Cycle'" is no small feat; very few opera companies have the wherewithal to do it. Each summer, the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, Germany performs the "Ring" in its entirety, but fortunately there are a handful of American opera companies that perform it, too. The San Francisco Opera will be débuting its much-heralded new production later this summer.
Due to request, David Kerr will be offering two preview lectures on Wagner's "Ring" in June. Parts 1 and 2 will be covered on Saturday, June 16 from 1:00 - 3:30 pm, with Parts 3 and 4 covered on Saturday, June 23 from 1:00 - 3:30 pm.
The cost is $30.00 per lecture for Goethe members, $40.00 per lecture for non-members. One need not register for both. To be taught in English, with no pre-existing knowledge of either music or German required.
This is a one-time only opportunity, with no plans to repeat as part of the regular "A Note on Opera" series. A minimum enrollment required, so advance registration is highly recommended.
