A Note on Opera: Giuseppe Verdi's "Macbeth"
Verdi's love of Shakespeare was ignited by the "Scottish play," leading to his first operatic adaptation of one of the Bard's works. Like the play, the role of Lady Macbeth dominates the opera and requires a soprano with a dark-hued, dramatic timbre. In the lead role of Macbeth himself, Verdi continued his long exploration of the richness in the baritone voice. The lack of a love story was a shock to mid-19th century Italian audiences, as Shakespeare hadn't been translated into Italian very long and only those literate in English were familiar with the play.
Verdi also gave voice to his fellow Italians' quest for national unity in a major departure from the play, the inclusion of his chorus of Scottish refugees, "Patria oppressa."
