A Note on Opera: Richard Strauss's "Arabella"
Vienna during Fasching, in the waning years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is the setting for Strauss's 1933 romantic comedy "Arabella." Like his earlier "Der Rosenkavalier" from 1911, his "Arabella" is suffused with nostalgia for an imagined lost era.
There are two pairs of lovers, one mature and the other younger. And despite creditors, some cross-dressing, and rumored infidelity, the opera closes with both couples engaged to be married.
It's also a rare example of Strauss writing for a coloratura soprano, complete with the requisite vocal fireworks. And with soprano and mezzo-soprano leads, Strauss continued his love affair with the female voice.
