A Note on Opera: Jules Massenet’s “Werther”
Jules Massenet was the most popular French opera composer of the late 19th century. His masterpiece “Werther,” based on Goethe’s novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers [The Sorrows of Young Werther], is quite faithful to the original source. “Werther” is an intimate work with a tragic story of impossible love between a young man and a young woman committed to fulfilling family obligations. Massenet was a master in depicting passion, so he does not disappoint in this heartbreakingly tender and moving score.
Taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of either music or French is required.
