“A Note on Opera”: Giacomo Puccini’s “The Girl of the Golden West”
Join our first exploration of a work by Giacomo Puccini, his 1912 “La fanciulla del West” [The Girl of the Golden West]. It’s his “American opera,” set in California during the Gold Rush and written for the Metropolitan Opera; it ultimately inspired countless film scores. It’s also one of his few operas without a tragic ending, with the lovers riding off together into the sunrise.
To be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of either music or Italian is required.
