“A Note on Opera”: Kurt Weill’s “Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny”
Premiered in 1930, this jazz-infused opera clearly comes out of Berlin’s cabaret tradition of social and political commentary. Its story is compelling and its music unforgettable! But despite its avant-garde nature, “Mahagonny” is still well within the German operatic tradition that stretches back to Mozart’s Singspiele.
To be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of either music or German is required.
