A Note on Opera: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”
Please join David for the fall quarter’s first “A Note on Opera.”
With a cast of only 6 characters, “Così” is Mozart’s most intimate mature work.
While “Così fan tutte” translates as “Thus do all women,” Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte make it clear that the men are just as culpable of infidelity. In a world prizing moral absolutes, at the opera’s conclusion the older-but-wiser protagonists no longer idealize their love interests, but rather see each other’s human flaws. They choose to overlook those flaws so to be with the ones they love; they’d rather be “happy” than to be “right.”
To be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of either music or Italian required.
Admission: Goethe-Atlanta members $20 per session; non-members $30 per session.
