A Note on Opera: "Hänsel und Gretel"
Please join Mr. David Kerr for the opera most identified with the holiday season, Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.”
The simple story is known to just about everyone, but Humperdinck’s score gives the opera’s lessons of fortitude, perseverance, and familial love a nobility and richness.
Though it demands a large orchestra, there’s a lightness and transparency to the score that makes it one of the most beautiful in all opera.
Its reputation as the most important German opera in the years after Wagner and before Strauss is well-deserved. “Hänsel und Gretel” is a particular favorite of mine.
$20.00 for members, $30.00 for non-members
To be taught in English by David Kerr
No pre-existing knowledge of either music or German required.
