on June 19 in 1865 Union troops arrived in Galveston, TX, and freed the remaining enslaved African Americans, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

Juneteenth was originally celebrated as Black Americans' Independence Day,
In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday, further solidifying its importance in American history.
