FILM: ROCK & CHISEL

FILM SCREENING

Join us in Alpharetta for the screening of the documentary "Steffen Thomas: Rock & Chisel"!

The documentary takes a close and personal look at the life of Steffen Thomas, the Bavarian-born artist behind some of the South’s most strident artwork. Known for busts and monuments early in his career, Thomas went on to create a prodigious amount of work in various media. His Trilon sculpture is an Atlanta landmark.

With a trove of archival footage, Rock & Chisel spotlights the complicated facets of this one-of-a-kind German-American artist Steffen Thomas at work and at play.

The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art has shared their vast archive with Milk Crate Films’ director, Jesse Stephen Freeman, who has been working on the project for four years. The result is a fascinating dive into the life of this talented, complicated artist.

See the home Thomas built stone-by-stone, the monumental public pieces around the country, the colorful mosaics and oil paintings, and the legendary Monument to the Brotherhood of Mankind, a massive work of art that required visitors to enter into a sunken sanctuary to experience. It was inside this work that Thomas carved his credo, “This world is too small for less than brotherhood, too dangerous for less than truth.”

The original score for Steffen Thomas: Rock & Chisel is composed by David Kirkland Garner and performed by Phillip Bush (piano) and Claire Bryant (cello). Michael Bruno is the Director of Photography and the film was edited by Will Eccleston for Kinetiscape Films. It’s directed by Jesse Stephen Freeman for Milk Crate Films.
