Austria National Holiday

Sunday, October 26, 2025

The Austrian National Holiday commemorates the Declaration of Neutrality (Neutralitätserklärung), a declaration by the Austrian Parliament declaring the country permanently neutral. It was enacted on 26 October 1955 as a constitutional act of parliament, i.e., as part of the Constitution of Austria.

Pursuant to resolution of the Federal Assembly of Parliament following the Austrian State Treaty, Austria declared "its permanent neutrality of its own accord". The second section of this law stated: "In all future times Austria will not join any military alliances and will not permit the establishment of any foreign military bases on her territory.

The best place to join the festivities is on the streets of the capital, Vienna. Here, you will find most of the large-scale festivities, including a military parade that takes place in the area around The Hofburg. Alongside vehicles and uniformed soldiers, the parade typically includes a marching band and other performances. You can also explore inside the Federal Chancellory and Austrian Parliament, where the President gives the annual address to the nation. You’ll also find the best selection of museums in the capital, many of which are typically free to visit on 26 October.

In most cities, towns, and villages across the country, you’ll find local events to check out. Some cities open their state buildings to the public, while others host musical performances in the main square. Celebrations might seem a little subdued because most locals mark the day by seeing friends and family or heading out into the countryside.

Other Nationalfeiertag traditions include lapping up the stunning mountain views and/or indulging in copious amounts of Austrian food.

We wish our Austrian friends, neighbors, and colleagues a happy holiday!
