Specialized Courses

We offer a variety of courses that focus on a specific set of skills or a specific topic, such as Exam Preparation, Skill Practice, and Culture & Society. These courses vary from quarter to quarter, and we always welcome student suggestions for new course themes!

Classes are typically 2.5-hour meetings with a 15 minute break. Some specialized courses are designated as "short" courses, meaning the course meetings only last 1.5 hours with no break.

With a Goethe-Zentrum Membership*, the short courses cost $260 for a full 10-week course or $130 for the 5-week option, and other specialized courses cost $390 for the 10-week course or $195 for the 5-week option.

*Please note: all current language course participants are required to have an active membership for the duration of the course should they be purchasing the course at the member rate. If you purchase a membership prior to registering but have not yet received your membership number, please indicate "pending" when prompted for your membership number in the registration form.

Silver Schnupperkurs

Silver Schnupperkurs

It's never too late to learn German, and with the Goethe Silver Schnupperkurs, it just got easier!

Whether you are looking to start your German language learning journey, or pick back up after a break from speaking the language, we curate a safe and light-hearted individual setting with one of our dedicated instructors as an introduction to our language courses.

The course offers three, 1.5-hour sessions with a private instructor via Zoom. After the Schnupperkurs, the student will be prepared to jump into the second half of the recommended group course or continue with private lessons with an instructor.

Catherine Snow, PhD, Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, explained that learning a language can be done at any age:

“The evidence clearly demonstrates that there is no critical period for second-language learning, no biologically determined constraint on language-learning capacity that emerges at a particular age, nor any maturational process which requires that older language learners function differently than younger language learners...Older learners have advantages. They already know one language (and sometimes more than one) quite well and have practiced with the linguistic capacities that speed language acquisition. They are typically better at intentional learning: They have study strategies, mnemonic devices, literacy skills, and other resources.”

* Membership requirements are waived for this course, however, they are required to participate in our other courses at the member-rate. Offer only valid for new students of the Goethe-Zentrum who have not previously participated in a language course.
